Real-Life Omens: Why Dogs Howl, Cows Cry, and Owls Screech

THIS IS NOT A DREAM. We explore the ancient folklore behind real-life animal behaviors—like a crying cow or a howling dog—and why they are feared as warnings of death.

THIS IS NOT A DREAM (Real Life Folklore)

Unlike the other entries on this site, this is not about dream interpretation. This is about Omens (Augury) observed in real life.

For centuries, elders have believed that animals possess a "sixth sense" that allows them to see things humans cannot—including spirits or the approach of death.

Note: These are ancient cultural beliefs. While many people swear by them, they are not 100% scientifically proven facts, so do not panic unnecessarily.

1. The Howling Dog

We are not talking about house pets or hybrid breeds here. This refers specifically to Native Dogs (Street Dogs or Original Breeds) that live close to nature.

The Omen: If a dog looks up at the sky in the middle of the night and lets out a long, mournful howl (not a bark, but a cry), or if it persistently whines looking at a specific house.
The Meaning: In folklore, it is believed that dogs can see Yama (the God of Death) or evil spirits entering a street. This behavior is often interpreted as a warning that a death may occur in that neighborhood soon.

2. The Crying Cow

The Cow is considered a sacred and highly sensitive animal in many cultures. It is believed to absorb the energy of the household it belongs to.

The Omen: If a cow tethered outside your house starts bellowing continuously without a physical cause, or more alarmingly, if it is observed shedding tears.
The Meaning: A crying cow is considered a severe bad omen. It is traditionally believed to predict a tragedy or a health crisis for the Head of the Household or the owner. It signifies that the animal is sensing a coming loss.

3. The Screeching Owl

While owls are wise in storybooks, in omenology, they are often seen as messengers of doom, especially if they appear during the day or sit on a human dwelling.

The Omen: If an owl sits on the roof, compound wall, or a tree directly facing your house and screeches repeatedly (a harsh, piercing sound).
The Meaning: "When the owl screeches, silence follows." This is widely interpreted as a signal of Death or extreme misfortune approaching that specific residence. It is seen as a call from the void.

What Should You Do?

If you witness these events in real life, folklore suggests these remedies to neutralize the fear:

1. Pray: Immediately offer a prayer to your family deity or Guardian God for protection.

2. Mantra: Chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (the victory over death mantra) is the traditional cure for the fear of death.

3. Feed Them: Offer food to the dog or cow. Calming the animal is believed to calm the negative energy surrounding the house.
